Ban Asbestos Now!

asbestosboxPrevent Cancer Now is working with Ban Asbestos Canada and a host of health, environmental and social justice groups to step up the fight to ban the Canadian production and export of chrysotile asbestos. Thanks to generous grants from the Saunders-Matthey Cancer Prevention Coalition, the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), and the Canadian Auto Workers, we are able to support three very wise and committed high school students from Smithers, British Columbia.

Chloe Staiger, Hayley McDermid and Claire Hinchliffe wrote a bill to end Canada’s mining and export of asbestos to developing countries. Their Member of Parliament, Nathan Cullen, presented the bill in the House of Commons on Monday, June 1.

A great deal of work also went on behind the scenes, with meetings with Members of Parliament and assistants, to try to gain support for the ban. The move to ban asbestos took a bit step forward, but we can’t win this one without YOU. Please step up with us! Go to our website and send a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Ignatieff and M. Duceppe, urging them to do the right thing. A letter and background material is ready and waiting for you to send.

Included in the campaign were the placement of bus shelter Ads at two strategic locations in Ottawa, and taking out a full page Ad in the Ottawa Citizen.
